Vehicles in any developing country are old and energy inefficient, idle-stop feature can be devised and installed to reduce GHG emission
Some of the car manufactures are incorporating idle-stop feature in recent years to further reduce fuel consumption and GHG emission. While it is expected to become a standard feature in the developed world, developing countries would embrace it at a slower pace due to increased cost and lack of regulatory awareness / enforcement on emission control.
In absence of mass transit / adequate public transport system, use of private passenger cars are only growing, lack of sufficient road, traffic management and poor road conditions make the vehicle idle for significant amount of time everyday. then again, most vehicles are very old and fuel inefficient.
Idea is to device idle-stop feature for the commonly used make/models in collaboration with engineers from renowned auto manufacturers and enthusiastic research groups. We would expect 8-10% fuel saving and associated reduction on GHG emission once idle-stop feature is installed in an vehicle running for few years.
Moderate to large scale implementation of the feature would require cost effective solution, awareness on saving on fuel cost and environment, government incentive & facilitation.
Sustainable transportation is gradually becoming a agenda for many countries gradually, it will not be long when developing countries would also be formulating regulations to limit emissions.
What are the key outcomes and impact of your solution?
Design and commercialization idle-stop kit for three / four models (manufactured in the last 8-10 years) of renowned manufacturers. retrofitting old cars with this features would save about 10% fuel.
With support from the government and other environmental bodies, 30-40% old cars are expected to be equipped with this feature.
What actions do you propose to realize your stated goals?
We are already in touch with couple of engineers who work for renowned electric car companies are eager to help with technical know-how to design robust solution, research group from an engineering university would be engaged to build & test prototypes. we would approach financial assistance form endowment funds and relevant government environment ministry.

Who will take these actions?
We plan to form a company based in US with branch in Bangladesh. we would engage Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to device prototype for commonly used car models in Dhaka city.
BUET alumni association has an endowment fund for such research and we expect to receive initial funding.
Ministry of Science and Technology in association with the ministry of energy & environment would have to play roles to encourage and facilitate uptake of idle - stop kits with a combination of incentives and regulation.
Initially in Bangladesh and eventually in many third-world countries.
What do you expect are the costs associated with piloting and implementing the solution, and what is your business model?
Pilot would require about $100K for to develop couple of idle-stop kits of popular model cars in Dhaka street, expected to be done in 8-12 months.
$2-3m would be required to set up production line, additional cost to setup conversion centers would be require. (detailed cost to be worked out at a later stage)
We would run the initiative as a non-profit.
